Interview with Mara Riopel on the importance of passive income and entrepreneurship.

“You may have seen others creating evergreen webinars or automated courses, running membership sites, or building network marketing businesses. That’s what they’re doing. They’re putting in the work up front and getting paid on it over and over (recurring revenue). Once you can take yourself out of being involved in each transaction, it becomes passive.” – Mara Riopel

Hello Mara, we are excited to share your story with our readers. Please tell us a little about yourselves and your work.

Hi everyone! My name is Mara Riopel. I had a successful corporate sales career and was making six figures, but I was constantly running on adrenaline, stressed out, and was working all the time building someone else’s business.

Also if I’m being honest, one day after an offside comment from a client, I realized that in the man’s world I was in, I was having to compromise myself personally and professionally to be at the level I was at. Not cool. I decided wearing pencil skirts and stilettos to the oilfield and construction sites was not the game I wanted to be in anymore, no matter how good my paychecks were.

I wanted to be recognized and respected for my brain despite my outfit, I wanted to collaborate not compete with other strong, driven women, I wanted to build something for myself, and I just wanted more. I deserved more.

I actually read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad on the beach with my husband on our honeymoon and in one week it literally changed my perspective about my future. I was running full tilt in the ‘rat race’ and hadn’t even realized it.

I wanted freedom and the biggest lesson I learned was that when you’re trading time for money it will never be enough to build the life you truly want. You need to have leverage.

That shifted my focus over to passive income streams and I’ve never looked back. It’s the biggest reason I’m now a commercial real estate investor and a network marketing professional.

We are entering an era where everyone is interested in multiple income streams. How does one decide on a business to pursue?

Mara Riopel : If you closed your laptop for a week starting tomorrow, would your business continue to earn you money? That’s how you decide.

Pursue streams where you can leverage your time to create passive income.

You may have seen others creating evergreen webinars or automated courses, running membership sites, or building network marketing businesses. That’s what they’re doing. They’re putting in the work up front and getting paid on it over and over (recurring revenue). Once you can take yourself out of being involved in each transaction, it becomes passive.

I’m a huge advocate for network marketing because there is unlimited upside potential. Literally unlimited! And if you partner with the right company your business is willable for up to 3 generations. Building a passive income stream for yourself plus long term generational wealth that you can hand down? Who’s not up for that?!

How do you differentiate yourself from others in your field?

Mara Riopel : The old school tactics of network marketing don’t work. Prospecting everyone you know, bugging friends and family, cold messaging, and home parties…. no one wants to be part of that.

What does work is personal branding, attraction marketing, and creating online community that provides real value and connection.

I partnered with a global health and wellness company and figured out how to run with a proven business model, but do it a different way.

If you’re already a successful influencer or entrepreneur, you can integrate a passive income stream like this seamlessly into what you’re already building without taking away from what you’re known for.

I don’t like being told what to do and I like to work with others who feel the same however I do love collaboration, and since entrepreneurship can be such a lonely sport, having the ability to be in business for yourself but never by yourself in this way is invaluable to me.

My vision has always been to bring smart, fun, driven business minds together who lift each other up in business but also in life. Having different experience, strategy, marketing ideas and leadership at the collective table so we can learn and grow from each other, all with a common income stream connecting us? It’s not rocket science if you ask me, it’s just smart business!

What advice would you give to someone asking for advice about becoming an entrepreneur?

Mara Riopel : Surround yourself with others who want what you want. There’s nothing that takes the wind out of your sails faster than constantly feeling shut down in conversations with people in your life who don’t get it.

Having a support network to bounce ideas off of and to lean on is huge. Build connections with others who are just as fired up about life and business as you and you’ll kick some butt out there!

Also, I’d say it’s really important to do some kind of personal growth every single day to strengthen your belief in yourself and in what you’re doing. Your own thoughts can make you or break you in business. Take care of what’s going on in your head.
